Getting Started in Government Contracting
New small businesses trying to break into GovCon.
Breaking into the world of government contracting can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be. Every year, billions of dollars in federal contracts are awarded to small businesses, and many of those opportunities are set aside specifically for companies like yours.
So where do you begin?
1. Register in SAM.gov
The first step is creating your profile in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov). Without this, you cannot bid on government contracts.
2. Identify Your NAICS Codes
The government buys everything from IT services to landscaping. Your NAICS codes tell contracting officers what your business provides.
3. Build Your Capability Statement
Think of this as your government résumé — a one-page document that highlights your services, certifications, and past performance.
4. Learn About Set-Asides
Small business set-asides such as 8(a), WOSB, SDVOSB, and HUBZone programs can open doors to contracts you may not compete for otherwise.
At Prodigy BPC, we help small businesses take these first steps with confidence — from SAM.gov registration and DFARS compliance to building a capability statement and bidding strategy.
